Chapter 1
My husband transferred nearly a million dollars to his secretary.
That money, which should have been part of our joint assets, became a "gift" to his mistress.
The woman even flaunted it on social media with a screenshot.
When I left a single comment: [Some people should know how to avoid suspicion.] I was promptly blocked by her.
My so-called husband then called to threaten me not to spread nonsense.
The next day, she posted another screenshot of a one-million-dollar transfer.
I knew this was her declaration of war against me.
But this time, I didn't care anymore.
I appeared to have a happy marriage, but at that moment, I was surrounded by unease and doubt.
My fingers idly swiped across my phone screen when a notification caught my eye. It was Maggie Bell, the woman who always maintained a professional presence in my life. She was my husband Jeremy Sisto's secretary.
Her post wasn't about trivial matters; it was a screenshot of a bank transfer. The numbers were like sharp blades stabbing into my heart.
"How ironic," I murmured to myself, emotions churning inside me.
What I once believed was an unbreakable marriage now seemed fragile in the face of those cold numbers.
But my fingers had a mind of their own. They clicked into the comments section, where I left the remark: [Some people should know to avoid suspicion.]
My warning made no waves. It was swiftly deleted by Maggie, and moments later, a harsh notification confirmed that she had blocked me.
At that moment, anger and humiliation surged within me.
I could almost hear the sound of my teeth grinding. "What gives her the right? How can she blatantly destroy someone else's family like this?"
Just as my emotions were about to collapse, my phone rang suddenly. Jeremy's name lit up on the screen, and my heart clenched tightly as I answered the call.
"Darlene, what are you doing? Why are you spreading nonsense online?" His voice was filled with anger and disbelief as if I were the one at fault.
"Spreading nonsense? Jeremy, do you even know what she posted?" I nearly shouted, holding the phone to my ear. But all I got in return was silence.
"Darlene, calm down. This is between us. Don't drag others into it." His tone softened slightly, but the implied defense of her cut through me like a knife.
"Between us? What is there between us that can't see the light of day? What do you call sending her so much money?" My voice trembled as I confronted him.
"Enough! Darlene, your unreasonable behavior has gone too far. I'm not going to argue with you anymore." With that, the line went dead.
When I tried calling him back, a cold mechanical voice informed me that his phone was off. Soon after, I saw that he'd blocked me on messaging apps as well. I laughed bitterly, a laugh-filled with despair and irony.
[Jeremy, don't regret this.] I sent him the text message, even though I knew he might never see it.
That night, I tossed and turned, my pillow soaked with tears.
The next morning, as the first rays of sunlight pierced through the curtains, I opened my eyes.
What greeted me wasn't hope for a new day but a harsher reality.
My phone buzzed incessantly with notifications. Opening it, I found countless messages from friends, all sharing screenshots.
Maggie had once again flaunted a transfer, this time an even more staggering sum—one million dollars.
"Is this her way of declaring war?"
A surge of unprecedented anger and sorrow rose within me.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.
